What is Windshield Repair
How Much Does Windshield Repair Cost?
The process of glass repair for chips and cracks involves infusing a polymer resin into the damaged area. Once fully dry and cured (usually after 24 hours), this material will have restored most if not all of your damage.
Chip and crack repairs depend on many factors primarily the skills of the technician and the quality of risen and tools used.
Windshield repair costs vary in the state of Arizona. A typical glass repair job costs around $50. Discounts are usually applied if there are more than one crack or chip. Cracks however are always dependent on the length of the crack.
Windshield Is A Safety Device
Most people think of a windshield solely as a barrier against the elements, but it actually serves several important safety functions. In a collision, the windshield prevents most outside objects from penetrating into the vehicle interior, protecting the occupants from serious injuries.
The windshield also provides structural support to the roof in a rollover accident, helping to prevent the roof from collapse. In addition, the windshield can help to deflect airbags in a frontal collision, providing an additional layer of protection for vehicle occupants. As a result, it is clear that the windshield plays a vital role in keeping drivers and passengers safe on the road.
Windshield Inspection and Maintenance
When it comes to cleaning your car’s windshield and other glass surfaces, it’s important to choose the right products. Ammonia-based cleaners may be effective at removing dirt and grime, but they can also damage dashboards, upholstery, and window tint films. Instead, opt for a non-ammonia cleaner and a soft cotton or microfiber towel.
These will remove dirt and grime without causing streaks or damage to your car’s interior. For hard-to-reach areas, such as the inside of the windshield, use a long-handled brush or sponge. And be sure to clean your car’s windows in the shade – direct sunlight can cause cleaner to evaporate too quickly, leaving behind streaks.
By following these simple tips, you can keep your car’s windshield and other glass surfaces clean and streak-free.
Tips for Windshield Maintenance
- Be sure to check for chips and cracks before driving. Cracks that are too large will need repair, while small rock chips such as minor “star” or “bullseye”. Any significant damage, usually any crack longer than 6 inches long, calls out complete replacement.
- Over time, tiny micro-pits on your car’s windshield build up as airborne particles hit it at high speeds. The pits reduce vision when illuminated by oncoming headlights at night or a rising/setting sun. There is no product in the market that will cure these cavities. A windshield replacement is recommended.
- Look out for any damage to the edges of your glass where glass meets the frame of your car. If you find that the rubber seal or glass seal (bonding) has deteriorated, this can weaken the integrity of the glass and could cause water leaks and wind noise at minimum. This type of damage can possibly be repaired.
- Make sure that the rubber on your windshield wiper blades are soft and elastic. Stiff windshield wiper blades could break causing the metal windshield wiper arms to rub against your windshield causing scratches.
Windshield Repair Has Come a Long Ways
Today’s innovative processes and materials make it possible to repair many types of windshield damages. The size of the damage and location of a chip or crack will determine if windshield is repairable.
Generally speaking and with some restrictions, chips smaller than an inch in diameter and cracks less than 6 inches in length are repairable. If the damage happens to be in the driver’s line of sight, then it is advisable to replace the windshield rather than repair it.
Windshield repair could cause vision distortions thus jeopardizing driver and passengers’ safety. Furthermore, if the damage (crack or chip) is close to the windshield edges, repairs in these cases are ineffective and a windshield replacement is warranted.
